    New textured cities added to Virtual Earth

    As part of last nights data update, a bunch of new 3d cities appeared in Virtual Earth. Minneapolis, MN, St. Paul, MN, Tacoma, WA, Irving, TX, Sacramento, CA. Also, a bunch more of the LA sprawl has been added.

    as I was poking around in the new 3D cities I found myself disoriented thinking I was in birds eye view a couple of times! the textured 3d cities are looking really sharp. kudos to the folks in Microsoft's Boulder, CO office for really rockin on the models. below are 2 screen shots of the same location, one in Birds Eye (an actual photograph taken with a super high res digital camera) and the other is a virtual representation of the same location.

     

    really nice. This is similar to a test I did in November with a more distant image of San Francisco from the Smithsonian's Earth from Space exhibit.

    I still continue to be unable to use this.  I have posted in the past and have not had any response.  I am running XP SP2 with IE7 and when I attempt to view anything in 3d, I get nothing but a blurry green earth.  Is there something I'm missing.  Is anyone else having this problem.  I would love to beta test this thing, but can't.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

    When I look at the pictures, I notice that the pitch of the buildings (especially the tower) is quite different. In addition traffic on the road is more visible in the textured version.
     
    Although the camera POV is slightly different, there seems to be more to this than that.
     
    1. Am I wrong
    2. Or does the 3D model have an fish-eye or curve-of-the earth model, that is designed to permit less obscuration by tall buildings and better eyeshot of the roads and street scenes (Something I appreicate a lot for the DOD intel applicaitons I am investigating).
