Farallon Geographics builds web based GIS for Boston Redevelopment Authority

It was just a few weeks ago that I was wondering out loud why more organizations weren't leveraging Virtual Earth in city planning applications. VE is a great web based visualization platform for GIS data. Actually, in that post I half answer my own question pointing out that the vast majority of this data is in Esri shape files and ArcSDE. Making this process easier is definitely an area the VE team needs to improve, but in the meanwhile tools like Arc2Earth, MapCruncher and MapDotNet Server ** are making great progress for us.

So it was timely to see this post from Chris Pendleton roll through my news reader this afternoon highlighting the recently completed web GIS redevelopment project for Boston by San Francisco based Farallon Geographics. Totally sick looking application that I'd like to try out, but will have to be content with this nice set of screengrabs for now. Definitely check it out- very impressive looking application leveraging Birds Eye imagery, 3d navigation, vector drawing, and raster overlays. Farallon's system interfaces with Arc GIS server and ArcSDE allowing the project data entered by staff to be instantly available to all city employees. It isn't clear if they leveraged one of the tools mentioned above or built from the ground up, but I hope to learn more about this application in the coming days.

** James Fee installed the latest version of MapDotNet Server and is trialing it. See his first impression here.

We have GIS map data of our city. Is there any solution to build searching website by using Virtual Earth Map Control base on our city map database not Virtual Earth database? Or can we upload our GIS data to Virtual Earth server? Because our city on Virtual Earth is not detailed. We cannot see roadmap of the city.

As the lead developer on this project, I think the most exciting thing about this integration was the ease with which we were able to combine data and map images out of ArcGIS Server 9.2 (a traditional GIS mapping server) and Virtual Earth.  What the screen shot fails to show, is the pushpin popup which pulls GIS data from Boston's SQL server and also displays an image of the project area that's streamed directly from ArcGIS Server.

To include the City’s high quality GIS basemap data (parcels, building outlines, and the like), we generated our own tile cache from Boston's ArcSDE GIS database (using Arc2Earth).  This lets us overlay the VE tiles with more current (and more accurate) GIS data when a user zooms past a set zoom level.  With these tiles we were able to show building outlines, parcels, the City’s own aerial imagery, and a whole bunch of other features of interest to the project team.  It's too bad the site isn't public, but you can check out more screen shots on our site.
